
Chelsea Nicole Smith, soprano, completed her Master of Music degree at Georgia State University in May of 2013. Roles included Governess in Turn of the Screw/Amy in Little Women/Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and Monica in The Medium. As a graduate and undergraduate, she was a frequent winner in the Missouri District, Tri-state, Georgia District, and South Eastern Region NATS competitions. Her voice teacher is Kay Paschal-Freeman.
Ms. Smith spent the summer of 2012 in Novafeltria, Italy, at La Musica Lirica where she sang Amor in Montiverdi's L’incoronazione di Poppea under the direction of Robert Breault. While in Novafeltria, Ms. Smith trained with Maestro Joseph Resigno and studied voice with her teacher, Ms. Paschal-Freeman. The following summer she studied in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop under the direction of Carroll Freeman. Here, she sang Greta Fiorentino in Weill's Street Scene, directed by Carroll Freeman.
Following this program, Ms. Smith ventured to Gallup, New Mexico, to study at the Land of Enchantment Opera program under the direction of Peter Strummer. Here, she made her New Mexico debut singing Zerbinetta in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, directed by Martha Collins and under the baton of Metropolitan Opera conductor Steven Crawford. While at Land of Enchantment Opera, she coached with Maestro Crawford, tenor Alan Glassman, and soprano Cheryl Parrish.
In November of 2013, Ms. Smith competed in the Brumby Concerto and Aria competition and won, singing selections from The Brentano Lieder at the Rialto Center for the Arts and conducted by Maestro Micheal Palmer.
Following in January of 2014, Ms. Smith competed in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in the Arkansas district and won the Encouragement Award. Later in July, she received the 2nd Place prize at the National NATS competition in Boston, Massachusetts and was a finalist in the Merola Young Artist Competition. This summer, Ms. Smith sang Sophie in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier under the direction of Carroll Freeman at Harrower opera and in October of this year won 3rd place in the Las Savell Competition in Memphis. Recently, she performed "Let the Bright Seraphim" as a guest artist with the orchestra for the 18th Annual Holiday Gala at the Rialto Center for the Arts.
Ms. Smith worked in master class settings with Frederica von Stade and Yang Yi of Renmin University, China. She has performed in Carnegie Hall, the Georgia Dome, Spivey Hall, and is currently preparing to sing “Gabriel” in Haydn's Samson with orchestra at the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta, Georgia, under the direction of Michael Palmer in April of 2016.
